how young is too young
ZLS Racer began to form his incredible work ethic at a young age, spending time outside school and on the weekends practicing in pursuit of the ultimate goal: to compete at the top level of motorsport as a professional Driver.
Indy 800
2019 at Indy 800 Racing was my first full championship year of racing at the Butterfly Farm just outside Sydney. In non-COVID times racing is held once a month between March and October on a Saturday, usually towards the end of the month. There are many categories and everyone and anyone can find somewhere to run.
Vehicle
My Kart has a COMER SW80 motor on a FOX Chasis. It’s a 2-Stroke engine that revs to about 12,000rpm. The kart has a solid rear axle and is driven with a chain from the engine to the axle. You can choose your own sprocket sizes and plenty of people at the track can advise you on the best setup. With the gearing we use at Indy800 I reach about 80km/h on the main straight. The COMER engine is super reliable and you can easily go for an entire season without having to rebuild or spend lots of money to stay competitive.
Racing Class
At Indy800 we have a one make class called COMER which is just for kids under 12. We can start racing at 7 years of age. Everyone has the same engine and the same tyres but there are many different chasis. The tyres are specified at the beginning of the season by the track. The 2019 and 2020 tyres for COMER are Maxxis SPORT. On the junior categories we run the same size tyres on the front and the back and these are actually two sets of the standard adult front tyres. Race days are all day Saturday and we get a practice, qualifying, two race heats, a semi-final and then a final. There is usually an hour or more between each time you go out for the other categories to run, but it’s fun because you get to hang out with your other racing buddies in between.
